Switch, WoodWing, EIDOS Media, InDesign, Protec and more. Through its full XML and web-services based integration capabilities, Claro allows an easy integration into existing workflows.
Getting your publication out or online on a regular basis means being on a tight schedule to meet deadlines. It often makes time-consuming tasks such as image optimisation problematic.
Claro is your image-processing server for automatic individual image analysis and enhancement!
Elpical Claro delivers fully automated image optimisation, not by just applying a number of fixed settings, but by intelligent image enhancement, based on the Claro Individual Image Analysis of each image. RAW images, typical image formats such as JPEG, TIFF, PSD and even PDF files can be dropped in a hot folder and are picked up and processed automatically.
Claro is an automatic image enhancement server. It automates the task of enhancing images manually (interactively) in Photoshop. In Photoshop, people make decisions based on what they see. That is dynamic image enhancement. Every image is different and needs different treatment.
Automating image enhancement through batch processing, like with Photoshop actions, is static image enhancement. The same set of filters and curves are applied to the complete set. Some images may come out nice, others may not.
Claro Premedia Integration Module
Jobtickets can be used to make channel settings more dynamic. Channel settings are overruled by the jobticket if the corresponding tag is present in the ticket. That allows you to vary certain parameters per image based on things happening outside the scope of Claro. Most commonly jobtickets are used to specify crop and size parameters per image. Output folder and file name are other good examples.
Export a channel, and you have the basic XML structure for jobtickets with almost all available tags. Almost, because jobtickets can also contain image specific actions that are not available in the normal channel settings like crop and rotation parameters.
Claro replaces the human decision making with image analysis. Each original image gets thoroughly analysed, and based on the results, the technology makes decisions on what to do with each individual image. That is automatic, yet dynamic image enhancement. And the Claro engine comes with a wide range of very specific publication-centric adjustments and settings to make sure you get exactly the look and feel you are looking for.
Based on this image analysis, Claro is able to identify “problem images” automatically. Claro works with hot-folder based workflows (channels) and can produce images for various print processes as well as for web and tablet publishing.
Benefits:
- Fully automatic individual image analysis and optimisation
- Consistent high quality results
- Full integration with Adobe Photoshop and InDesign
- Workflow optimised for today’s cross-medial landscape
The Elpical Claro JobClient for InDesign® offers seamless integration of the Claro Premedia workflow into InDesign.
The Claro Inspector for Photoshop® allows side-by-side viewing of original and processed image versions.
Online, real-time licence activation
Claro 10 features a complete licence overview, and ability to activate a new licence online, in real-time. Licences can also be de-activated, if they need to be moved to another machine.
Claro Settings Assistant
The new Claro Settings Assistant offers an easy-to-use environment for creating, modifying and personalising settings, without the immediate and direct need for hands-on, expert setup. Optimised setting results are immediately displayed in the drag-and-drop interface. Settings are initially created from scratch or imported from the available channels on the production server. After Claro completes analysis and relevant customisation, these settings are exported as an xml file, for import into Claro Premedia.
Important contrast advancements
Preserve contrast in images through an optional brightness correction curve
With standard brightness curve limitations, dark areas are often brightened more than the lighter parts of an image, resulting in lower contrast. By using Claro’s optional brightness correction curve, only the image’s mid-tones are manipulated, resulting in image brightness adjustment that does not affect the overall contrast of the image.
Isolate contrast manipulation to protect colour and hue through “contrast in luminosity-mode”
Contrast manipulation in images often causes unwanted side-effects: such as colours becoming too saturated, or even complete colour changes. To combat these and other problems, Claro now offers the advanced “contrast in luminosity mode” feature to isolate contrast manipulation from colour manipulation, and thereby protect colour and hue integrity.
Red eye reduction
Claro’s newest red eye detection gives you the standard choice to reject, inspect or even immediately correct the red eye. Combined with an extra option to specify that detection is only needed when a flash function has been utilised, optimisation errors are reduced significantly.
BENEFITS:
- Consistently high-quality image enhancements across varied individual images
- Save massive amounts of time on producing image-specific enhancements

Consistent, high-quality results
It is due to this fundamental approach that we achieve consistent high-quality results even when the origin and quality of the original images vary significantly. It prevents, for example, images which are already quite sharp from being over-sharpened.
Image enhancement
Claro utilises superior enhancement techniques: for example, the sharpening algorithms. The sharpening that will be applied to a given image varies in amount and threshold, depending on sharpness and (reduced) noise levels in the original image. A sophisticated anti-halo filter is applied to reduce the undesirable side effects of sharpening.
Local contrast-enhancement
Images taken in bright sunlight have high contrast levels. Ideally, details should be preserved and enhanced both in the bright as well as in the dark areas of the image, without effecting overall brightness of the image. This is now possible with Claro’s local contrast-enhancement algorithm. Image analysis ensures that this technique is only applied to images that require it.
Background processing
Claro Premedia Server is a background process. It can process high volumes of images without human intervention. An infinite number of channels can be defined for processing images for various applications such as publication on the internet or for print.
Photoshop Inspector
If desired, images of insufficient quality can be automatically routed to an inspector queue for manual inspection in Photoshop. Original and processed images can be viewed side-by-side. The Photoshop Plug-in runs on PC or Apple clients, and connects to the Claro server process.
Individual image enhancement in PDF files
This powerful feature enables the development of new services for your customers and improves the print quality of customer PDF files. You are now able to enhance, resample and even colour convert images in your customers’ PDF files.
ICC-based colour conversions
Claro is fully ICC (International Colour Consortium) compliant. Claro can utilise embedded profiles or assumed profiles to open an image and convert it to the working RGB colour space of choice. Images are converted to the specified output colour space, or converted back to the original colour space. Profiles are optionally embedded in the output files.
XML support
Claro supports XML job files. The use of these job files ensures that the integration of Claro into an existing workflow is not a difficult task. Job files can control Claro to a large extent: origin and destination of the file to process, crop & sise information, file format, enhancements to apply, even name and extension of the output file. All this can be specified in a XML job file. The format of XML job files is well documented. The simplest job file contains only a few tags.
Claro Offers:
