Praise for Claro Premedia 11

From the beginning USA TODAY has always expected the highest imaging quality. We have always placed a very strong emphasis on the quality of our colour, from taking pictures and scanning images in the early days, through colour correction and output of film, and finally to press. For us, making the transition to an all digital workflow was about maintaining that level of quality. Elpical Claro is helping us on the operational side by increasing our productivity as well as helping us meet and maintain our quality standards. And working with Elpical has been great. They listen to and often incorporate our input about making their product better, and work hard to resolve any issue we come up with.

-Ron Cobbs, Operations Manager Production at USA Today

We aren’t always in the position of having the best quality image to work with; so having the right tools to maximise quality is important to us. Claro lets us do that and maintain both quality and the integrity of the image. Having the Claro software to automate the transformation process for using the images in different places, the Web and print, for example, really decreases our workload. We’re using Claro to branch off for uses in other USA TODAY products. We can choose the correct profile depending on the use of the image and have it come out right, automatically, over and over again. We tune the profiles we use with Claro to our specific needs. With 35 domestic print sites, this is a great time savings. We no longer need to look at each individual image. We have set up our own rules, based on our requirements, for when an image needs to be checked manually. The Claro software lets us control how we want the images optimised and gives us plenty of flexibility, but for the most part it’s an automated process. We press the button and send it on. We may see the image in the proofing pages, but otherwise we let it fly…

-Mike Grinder, Prepress Operations Technician at USA Today

Customer Testimonials for XChange

A big thank you for all your help over the last 2 years in teaching me how to get the best out of Switch, and to let you know that I have really enjoyed learning from you. I will have no hesitation in recommending XChange in the future for anything software related.

-Andy Feltham, Digital Solutions Manager at Raccoon

When it comes to servicing, an upgrade or anything dealing my favorite plug-in, I get in touch with XChange. I have had my dealings with other software resellers and look for a company that can provide customer service and support as well as prompt delivery. I found these things in XChange when I purchased my most recent upgrade through them. After receiving my product promptly after purchase, I also received a phone call from a representative who wanted to make sure I had seen the arrival of my new software version and asked if I needed anything else. She was very nice it was such a refreshing experience. I would recommend this company to anyone with print software needs.

Description

Getting your publication out or online on a regular basis means being on a tight schedule to meet deadlines. It often makes time-consuming tasks such as image optimisation problematic.

Claro is your image-processing server for automatic individual image analysis and enhancement!

Claro Premedia delivers fully automated image optimisation, not by just applying a number of fixed settings, but by intelligent image enhancement, based on the Claro Individual Image Analysis of each image. RAW images, typical image formats such as JPEG, TIFF, PSD and even PDF files can be dropped in a hot folder and are picked up and processed automatically.

Claro is an automatic image enhancement server. It automates the task of enhancing images manually (interactively) in Photoshop. In Photoshop, people make decisions based on what they see. That is dynamic image enhancement. Every image is different and needs different treatment.

Automating image enhancement through batch processing, like with Photoshop actions, is static image enhancement. The same set of filters and curves are applied to the complete set. Some images may come out nice, others may not.

Claro replaces the human decision making with image analysis. Each original image gets thoroughly analysed, and based on the results, the technology makes decisions on what to do with each individual image. That is automatic, yet dynamic image enhancement. And the Claro engine comes with a wide range of very specific publication-centric adjustments and settings to make sure you get exactly the look and feel you are looking for.

Based on this image analysis, Claro is able to identify “problem images” automatically. Claro works with hot-folder based workflows (channels) and can produce images for various print processes as well as for web and tablet publishing.

Benefits:
  • Fully automatic individual image analysis and optimisation
  • Consistent high quality results
  • Full integration with Adobe Photoshop and InDesign
  • Workflow optimised for today’s cross-medial landscape

The Elpical Claro JobClient for InDesign® offers seamless integration of the Claro Premedia workflow into InDesign.

The Claro Inspector for Photoshop® allows side-by-side viewing of original and processed image versions.

Online, real-time licence activation

Claro features a complete licence overview, and ability to activate a new licence online, in real-time. Licences can also be de-activated, if they need to be moved to another machine.

Claro Settings Assistant

The new Claro Settings Assistant offers an easy-to-use environment for creating, modifying and personalising settings, without the immediate and direct need for hands-on, expert setup. Optimised setting results are immediately displayed in the drag-and-drop interface. Settings are initially created from scratch or imported from the available channels on the production server. After Claro completes analysis and relevant customisation, these settings are exported as an xml file, for import into Claro Premedia.

Important contrast advancements

Preserve contrast in images through an optional brightness correction curve

With standard brightness curve limitations, dark areas are often brightened more than the lighter parts of an image, resulting in lower contrast. By using Claro’s optional brightness correction curve, only the image’s mid-tones are manipulated, resulting in image brightness adjustment that does not affect the overall contrast of the image.

Isolate contrast manipulation to protect colour and hue through “contrast in luminosity-mode”

Contrast manipulation in images often causes unwanted side-effects: such as colours becoming too saturated, or even complete colour changes. To combat these and other problems, Claro now offers the advanced “contrast in luminosity mode” feature to isolate contrast manipulation from colour manipulation, and thereby protect colour and hue integrity.

Red eye reduction

Claro’s newest red eye detection gives you the standard choice to reject, inspect or even immediately correct the red eye. Combined with an extra option to specify that detection is only needed when a flash function has been utilised, optimisation errors are reduced significantly.

BENEFITS:
  • Consistently high-quality image enhancements across varied individual images
  • Save massive amounts of time on producing image-specific enhancements
  • Process with confidence, knowing Claro Premedia will only enhance images where needed and even perform batch image enhancement inside PDF files
  • Stay in control of your workflow with Elpical Claro Inspector that route images to Adobe® Photoshop® for side-by-side comparisons
  • Seamless integration with leading workflow solutions like CCI, K4, SWITCH, WoodWing, EIDOS Media, InDesign, Protec, and more

Consistent, high-quality results

It is due to this fundamental approach that we achieve consistent high-quality results even when the origin and quality of the original images vary significantly. It prevents, for example, images which are already quite sharp from being over-sharpened.

Image enhancement

Claro utilises superior enhancement techniques: for example, the sharpening algorithms. The sharpening that will be applied to a given image varies in amount and threshold, depending on sharpness and (reduced) noise levels in the original image. A sophisticated anti-halo filter is applied to reduce the undesirable side effects of sharpening.

Local contrast-enhancement

Images taken in bright sunlight have high contrast levels. Ideally, details should be preserved and enhanced both in the bright as well as in the dark areas of the image, without effecting overall brightness of the image. This is now possible with Claro’s local contrast-enhancement algorithm. Image analysis ensures that this technique is only applied to images that require it.

Background processing

Claro Premedia Server is a background process. It can process high volumes of images without human intervention. An infinite number of channels can be defined for processing images for various applications such as publication on the internet or for print.

Photoshop Inspector

If desired, images of insufficient quality can be automatically routed to an inspector queue for manual inspection in Photoshop. Original and processed images can be viewed side-by-side. The Photoshop Plug-in runs on PC or Apple clients, and connects to the Claro server process.

Individual image enhancement in PDF files

This powerful feature enables the development of new services for your customers and improves the print quality of customer PDF files. You are now able to enhance, resample and even colour convert images in your customers’ PDF files.

ICC-based colour conversions

Claro is fully ICC (International Colour Consortium) compliant. Claro can utilise embedded profiles or assumed profiles to open an image and convert it to the working RGB colour space of choice. Images are converted to the specified output colour space, or converted back to the original colour space. Profiles are optionally embedded in the output files.

XML support

Claro supports XML job files. The use of these job files ensures that the integration of Claro into an existing workflow is not a difficult task. Job files can control Claro to a large extent: origin and destination of the file to process, crop & sise information, file format, enhancements to apply, even name and extension of the output file. All this can be specified in a XML job file. The format of XML job files is well documented. The simplest job file contains only a few tags.

Claro Offers:
  • Automatic image enhancement based on image analysis
  • Background server process
  • Web-based user interface
  • Processing images in PDF files
  • XML integration support
  • Java API available
  • Photoshop integration for optimum control
  • Routing of files
  • ICC based colour conversions
  • Local contrast enhancement

Over the years, Claro has become the automatic enhancement solution of choice for customers around the globe offering the best value for money in its category. Renowned publishers rely on Claro to automate retouching of images, ready for production.

  • Microsoft Windows® Server 2012
  • Microsoft Windows® Server 2012 R2
  • Microsoft Windows® Server 2016

Linux

Software

  • Linux has many different flavours, and Claro will run on most of them (there is experience with Red Hat, Suse and Centos flavours). A 64bit Java Runtime Environment, version 7 or higher must be installed.

Hardware

  • Dual Core processor with 3Ghz and 4GB RAM (for processing one image at a time)
  • 8 Core processor with 3 Ghz and 16BG RAM (for processing 4 images simultaneously)

I/O Performance

  • Not usually found in system requirements, I/O performance can nevertheless be very important for the performance of applications, and indeed it is for Claro. On physical, dedicated machines, this typically is not an issue, although there is a considerable advantage in using SSD drives. Note: Claro works fine in virtual environments. The performance is comparable with running Claro on physical machines IF the I/O performance is good. Which is not always the case, and also difficult to asses in a virtual environment.

Throughput & Performance

  • Here we provide an example of some processing times on a MacBook Pro 13\", with a 2.6 Ghz Intel i5 (2 cores) and 8GB RAM, and an SSD harddrive, using one image process, and all typical features enabled. Keep in mind that you can process up to 4 images simultaneously in a properly dimensioned server. That means that to calculate throughput you can divide the processing time per image by approximately a factor of 3 (since there is a little overhead in processing 4 images simultaneously). In this example configuration, the SSD drive is good, but the processor is hardly suitable with only 2 cores and 2.6 Ghz.
  • 0.5 million-pixel image: 2 sec
  • 6 million-pixel image: 23 sec
  • 18 million-pixel image: 40 sec
  • Per the times listed above, number of pixels is a major factor in performance. Claro can also resample images. It is the first step in the processing sequence. If you can downsample images based on a known output size and required resolution, the processing will typically be much faster.

Java Runtime Environment

  • Claro requires a Java Runtime Environment. If you run the installer it will check for the availability of a correct Java Runtime Environment installation. If the check fails, the installer informs you and sends you to a download page where you can download it. You need version 7 or higher, and you need a 64bit version.

Other Details

  • Claro can use input and output folders that reside on network volumes if it has read and write permissions on those folders.
  • Claro gets installed as a background process (called \"service\" on Windows and \"Daemon\" on Mac OS X and Linux platforms). If installed with default settings, the service/daemon will start automatically at system boot. It will monitor the hot folders and process images regardless of whether the user-interface runs or not.
  • To access folders on the network, Claro needs read and write access to those folders. For this reason it is important to start the service/daemon from a user account with full read/write access. On Mac OS X, it will run with the user-account that was logged on to the system to install Claro.
  • On Windows, you have the opportunity to choose a user-account and specify the password during installation. The installer checks whether the username and password are correct and can actually be used to start the service. If you leave those fields blank, the service will run with local system account. The local system account on Windows never has access to the network. Even if the network folders have \"full control\" acces for \"everybody\", Claro will not be able to use those folders if it runs with local system account but you can change the logon of the service in the Windows services control panel. Flows will be put on standby automatically if the input folder is not accessible.
